Engine Block FAQs

A used short block includes the engine block, crankshaft, rods, and pistons. A long block includes the short block plus cylinder heads and camshafts. At Falcon Car Parts, we supply both depending on your rebuild needs.

Absolutely. Every block we sell undergoes a rigorous inspection. This includes a visual check for heat stress and, for high-performance cores, a Magnetic Particle Inspection (Mag-testing) to ensure there are no microscopic cracks in the valley or cylinder walls.

Yes. We check the deck (the surface where the head gasket sits) for warping using a precision straight-edge and feeler gauges. We ensure all blocks meet OEM tolerances so you can achieve a perfect head gasket seal.

Most of our inventory consists of standard bore blocks that haven't been bored out yet. If a block has been previously bored (e.g., .030 over), we will clearly state that in the quote. We measure cylinder taper and out-of-roundness to ensure the block is a viable candidate for your build.

Yes. Main caps are line-bored specifically to each individual block during manufacturing. We never sell a block without its original, matching main caps, as using mismatched caps can lead to catastrophic engine failure.

We use Direct VIN Matching. When you provide your Vehicle Identification Number, our database ensures the casting numbers and accessory mounting holes match your specific year, make, and model exactly.

We prioritize "seasoned" blocks. These are used blocks that have gone through thousands of heat cycles, making the metal more stable than a brand-new casting. We ensure there are no deep scores or heavy ridges that would prevent a successful hone or bore.

Due to the weight (often 150–250 lbs), engine blocks are cleaned, oiled to prevent rust, and secured to a heavy-duty wooden pallet. They are shipped via LTL Freight. We recommend shipping to a commercial address with a loading dock or forklift to avoid residential liftgate fees.

While we "hot-tank" our blocks to remove the majority of grease and scale, we always recommend a final soapy water wash and a fresh coat of engine oil or assembly lube by your machinist before the final assembly to ensure a surgical level of cleanliness.

Yes, every engine block undergoes a visual and/or magnetic particle inspection (mag-testing) to ensure there are no structural cracks or heat damage before being listed for sale.
